Kowloon Masjid and Islamic Centre

Islamic Center · Hong Kong, China

Kowloon Masjid and Islamic Centre, also known as Kowloon Mosque, is the largest mosque in Hong Kong and one of the city’s most recognisable Islamic landmarks. It is located at 105 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, beside Kowloon Park and near the busy intersection of Nathan Road and Haiphong Road. Its central location makes it an important prayer space for local Muslims, office workers, residents, and Muslim travellers exploring the Tsim Sha Tsui and Kowloon areas. The Hong Kong Tourism Board describes it as Hong Kong’s largest mosque, with capacity for up to 3,500 worshippers.

The mosque has a long history connected to Hong Kong’s Muslim community. It was first established in the late 19th century to serve Muslim soldiers stationed near the former Whitfield Barracks, an area that later became Kowloon Park. The current mosque building was opened in 1984, after the earlier structure was replaced due to redevelopment and structural issues linked to nearby MTR construction.

Architecturally, Kowloon Masjid and Islamic Centre stands out with its white exterior, large dome, arched windows, and four minarets. The building includes prayer halls, madrasah facilities, a community hall, a library, and other spaces used for religious and community activities. Its design provides a peaceful contrast to the dense commercial surroundings of Nathan Road.

Today, the mosque remains a major centre for Islamic worship, education, and community life in Hong Kong. It hosts daily prayers, Friday prayers, religious learning, and community programmes, while also serving as a useful prayer stop for Muslim visitors staying in or passing through Tsim Sha Tsui. Its location near Kowloon Park, Chungking Mansions, public transport, hotels, and halal food options makes it especially convenient for travellers.
