Sunshine Mosque

Sunshine Mosque

Mosque · Melbourne, Australia

Sunshine Mosque reflects the history of Melbourne’s Turkish Cypriot community and its effort to establish a lasting place of worship in the city’s western suburbs. The organisation behind it, the Cyprus Turkish Islamic Community of Victoria, moved through earlier community bases in Richmond and Clifton Hill before relocating to Ballarat Road in 1985. The project required strong local fundraising and long-term community support, with development guided by figures including the late Hasan Dellal.

The mosque is known for its Ottoman architectural character, making it visually distinct along the western approach to Melbourne. Its domes, minaret, courtyard, and masonry give the building a form associated with Turkish mosque design while still sitting within a suburban Australian setting. Sunshine Mosque also functions as a meeting place, cultural centre, and community facility, with services extending to women, elderly members, and youth groups. Its position near Sunshine and Ardeer places it within one of Melbourne’s most diverse western corridors, where migrant communities, local shops, transport routes, and residential streets meet around a long-established religious landmark.
