Mosque · Shanghai, China

Pudong Mosque reflects the movement of Shanghai’s Muslim community into the city’s newer eastern district. The mosque was first established in 1935 at Wujiating on Pudong Avenue, at a time when the area was much less developed than the commercial district it is today. As the local community grew, the mosque was expanded in 1984. In 1995, it was rebuilt at its present site on Yuanshen Road with a larger structure and fuller facilities, aligning its role with the rapid development of Pudong.

The building has a light-coloured exterior, green domes, and a tall minaret that gives it a clear presence near the surrounding residential and commercial streets. The complex includes a courtyard, prayer hall, imam’s room, ablution area, office space, and sections arranged for Friday prayer and women’s use. Its setting near Yuanshen Sports Center places it within a practical urban corridor rather than a historic old-town quarter. Pudong Mosque is therefore important as a modern district mosque: it serves a growing part of Shanghai while keeping continuity with an older congregation that began on the east side of the Huangpu River before Pudong’s transformation.
