Ali's Halal Kitchen
Casual Dining · Kobe, Japan
Cuisines: Pakistani
A short walk from Kobe Mosque, the oldest mosque built in Japan, Ali's Halal Kitchen sits on Nakayamatedori in a part of Chuo-ku that has grown into the city's main cluster of South Asian and Middle Eastern dining, built up around the mosque's congregation since the building was completed in 1935. The mosque itself is often cited for having withstood both wartime bombing raids in the 1940s and the 1995 earthquake that levelled large parts of the surrounding city, and the community that has grown up around it over the following decades is part of why this stretch of Nakayamatedori looks the way it does today.
The menu is Pakistani, centred on a tandoor used for both bread and meat. Naan comes fresh from the oven throughout service, and the kitchen turns out biryani, kebabs, and a changing selection of curries alongside it. Portions run generous rather than refined, a style suited to the casual, walk-in crowd the restaurant tends to draw rather than to a slower, multi-course dinner.
Nakayamatedori sits a few minutes on foot from the Kitano hillside, the city's well known enclave of preserved Western-style merchant houses built after Kobe's port opened to foreign trade in the late nineteenth century. That history is part of why the surrounding streets hold such a mix of restaurants today, from Chinese and Indian kitchens to the mosque itself, clustered within a few blocks of each other. Ali's Halal Kitchen fits into that texture as a straightforward, no-frills option among more polished neighbours, with a dining room that seats a modest number of tables and keeps the focus on the food coming out of the kitchen rather than on presentation.
