Getting here is the easy part. NEX sits directly above Serangoon MRT station, an interchange on the North East and Circle lines, as well as the Serangoon bus interchange, and this outlet occupies a basement unit within the mall. That accessibility has made it the reference point for fish and chips in the north east, an area where the dish is otherwise mostly found at hawker Western stalls.
The restaurant is part of a six outlet chain operated by Minor Food Singapore, and the menu is consistent across locations. The core order is battered fish with fries, with the fish chosen from four varieties led by barramundi, the most popular of the range for its thick, firm fillet. Each plate arrives with tartar sauce and guacamole, plus one more sauce of the diner's choosing, either a homemade curry sauce with a mild kick or a brown sauce modelled on the British condiment. Mushy peas and a lemon wedge complete the plate.
Beyond the headline dish, the small plates section carries salted egg prawns and tempura calamari, both nods to local tastes, and the sides list includes a truffle macaroni and cheese. Fried cauliflower, served with a spicy mentaiko dip, is a common add-on order. A two course set meal offers value for solo diners, though the fish and chips option within it is fixed to dory, the entry level fish. Desserts include a pineapple fritter with vanilla ice cream.
Portions are sized for one, and sharing works better with a few sides added.
