Kunming Islamic Food

Tucked in a quiet back alley off Fuxing North Road in Taipei's Songshan District, Kunming Islamic Restaurant (昆明園) is one of Taipei's most beloved and longstanding halal institutions — a modest, warmly atmospheric eatery that has been welcoming Muslim diners and curious food lovers alike for over three decades. Run by owner Yacoob Ma (universally known as "Mr Ma") and his wife, the restaurant is a deeply personal reflection of a Muslim family's culinary heritage, drawing on the traditions of Yunnan province in southwestern China, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent to produce a menu that is truly unlike anything else in Taipei.

The restaurant's walls tell their own story — tables and surfaces are covered in banknotes and notes with signatures from visitors representing countries from across the globe, a living testament to the diverse community of Muslims from around the world who have found comfort and a taste of home here over the years. The decor carries an Islamic theme throughout, with ornaments and motifs that create a calm and welcoming ambience. The atmosphere is modest and unpretentious — this is a place that invites you to relax, linger, and eat well.

The menu is a rich cross-cultural spread. Standout dishes include mutton curry, curried lamb, fried fish with spicy sauce, shrimp curry, fried beef with spring onion, stir-fried water spinach, samosas, chicken tandoori, and biryani rice. The restaurant is also particularly noted for its strong vegetarian offerings — a rarity among halal restaurants — including an excellent hummus, a refreshing tea leaf salad with fava beans, and eggplant dishes that have earned loyal fans. Steaming, fragrant roti (flatbread) arrives at the table in generous quantities and is a highlight of the meal. Some dishes carry a distinctively Burmese influence with a warm turmeric undertone, reflecting the Yunnan-Myanmar culinary corridor that shaped Mr Ma's food traditions.

Mr Ma himself is a figure of warmth and genuine hospitality. He has been known to open the restaurant early for fasting guests during Ramadan, offering dates and water, and to treat diners to complimentary hot tea — small gestures that have left a deep impression on countless visitors. Advance reservations are recommended, particularly for large groups, as the restaurant fills up quickly at lunch and dinner. The location is a short walk from Nanjing Fuxing MRT Station, though the narrow alley makes car parking a challenge.
