Masjid Darul Arqam (Asakusa Mosque)

Masjid Darul Arqam (Asakusa Mosque)

Mosque · Tokyo, Japan

Masjid Darul Arqam, commonly referred to as Asakusa Mosque, brings Islamic community life into one of Tokyo’s most historic visitor districts. Completed in 1998, the mosque is managed by the Japan Mosque Foundation, part of the Islamic Circle of Japan. Its location in Higashi Asakusa places it close to the older eastern side of the city, near Sumida Park, the Sumida River, Tokyo Skytree, and the temple streets and traditional neighbourhoods associated with Asakusa.

The building is compact but carefully organised for urban use. It has five floors, with a cultural centre on the first floor, prayer areas for men and women on the middle floors, and facilities for dining and the imam’s residence above. This vertical layout reflects the way many Tokyo mosques adapt to limited land while still supporting regular congregational prayer, Friday services, study, library use, marriage arrangements, shahadah support, and funeral-related services. Asakusa Mosque is distinctive because it combines a central Tokyo location with a community-centre function, serving local worshippers, visitors, and Muslims moving through one of the city’s most active cultural areas.
