Masjid Indonesia Tokyo
Mosque · Tokyo, Japan
Masjid Indonesia Tokyo in Meguro reflects the growth of the Indonesian Muslim community in Japan. Also called Meguro Mosque, it was developed with the support of KMII, the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, and Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with the groundbreaking held during Eid al-Fitr in 2015. The mosque is closely connected with KMII’s wider role as a platform for Indonesian Muslims in Japan, supporting prayer, outreach, family services, religious learning, and community development.
The building sits near the Indonesian School in Tokyo, giving it a natural connection with families, students, residents, and visiting Indonesians. Its structure is designed across several levels, with prayer areas for men and women, ablution facilities, library space, and an Indonesian cultural centre. The second-floor connection to the school hall also allows the space to support larger congregations during Friday and Eid prayers. Masjid Indonesia Tokyo is distinctive because it combines worship with cultural continuity, helping Indonesian Muslims in Tokyo maintain language, community bonds, religious education, and social support while living in Japan’s capital.
