Ton Son Mosque
Mosque · Bangkok, Thailand
Ton Son Mosque is one of Bangkok’s oldest Islamic landmarks, with origins traced to 1688 during the Ayutthaya period. The mosque stands in Bangkok Yai, on the Thonburi side of the city near Khlong Bangkok Yai and the Chao Phraya River. Its early form was a teak structure influenced by local Thai building traditions, reflecting the way Muslim communities adapted their places of worship to the architecture of the surrounding society.
The present mosque has been rebuilt and renovated over time, with the current structure showing stronger Middle Eastern visual influences while retaining Thai decorative details. A historic graveyard beside the mosque contains burials connected with Muslim community leaders, adding to the site’s heritage value. Ton Son Mosque remains an active place of worship and learning, serving local families, Friday congregations, and younger students through religious education. Its location near Wat Arun and other old Thonburi religious sites places it within one of Bangkok’s most layered historic districts.
