Café Kool

Café Kool

Casual Dining · Hong Kong, China

Cuisines: International, Western, Japanese, Southeast Asian

Twelve live cooking stations run simultaneously at Café Kool, the buffet restaurant on the mezzanine level of Kowloon Shangri-La, each staffed to prepare food to order rather than holding it in a steam tray until a guest arrives. That format, more interactive than the fixed-station buffets found at many hotel restaurants, has become the draw for a restaurant built around variety across Southeast Asian, Western, and Japanese cooking rather than a single cuisine.

A seafood bar anchors one corner of the room, its iced display rotating through the kind of fresh catch usually reserved for à la carte seafood restaurants, while a dedicated carving station works through premium cuts sliced to order. Laksa gets its own station too, the noodles served Singaporean style in a broth built around a punchy, seafood forward stock rather than the milder coconut versions found elsewhere. The hotel operates the restaurant's kitchen under its own halal certification, offering a full range of halal dishes across the buffet rather than treating it as a side menu, a distinction that sets Café Kool apart from hotel restaurants that only accommodate halal requests case by case.

That certification sits within a broader commitment at Kowloon Shangri-La, which became the first hotel in Hong Kong to receive a five-Crescent rating from CrescentRating, the Singapore-based agency that assesses hospitality for Muslim travellers, a recognition later extended to its sister properties across the harbour. The hotel occupies a prominent stretch of Mody Road in Tsim Sha Tsui East, within walking distance of the Museum of Art and the harbourfront promenade, putting Café Kool within easy reach for both hotel guests and visitors making a specific trip for the buffet.

Smart casual dress and a dinner buffet running into the evening give Café Kool a wider window than most standalone halal restaurants in the district, and its scale, spanning multiple cuisines across a dozen live stations, offers a different kind of halal dining experience than the smaller, single-cuisine kitchens that make up most of Hong Kong's halal restaurant scene.
