Hjh Maimunah - Kampong Gelam
Casual Dining · Halal certified · Singapore City, Singapore
Cuisines: Indonesian, Malaysian
Named after the founder's mother, Hjh Maimunah is a beloved kampung-style Malay restaurant tucked behind the Sultan Mosque on Jalan Pisang in Kampong Gelam. Its cheerful yellow façade draws you in, and inside, an extensive spread of familiar Malay dishes, kuehs, and sauces are laid out in glass trays and display counters.
Today the restaurant is run by second-generation owner Ms Mastura Binte Didih Ibrahim and her sisters, who are dedicated to keeping the family recipes alive and sharing Malay cuisine with the younger generation. The simple philosophy — freshness and consistency — is what underpins every dish, with a central kitchen producing all the pastes and sauces used across their outlets.
The Jalan Pisang branch is the original flagship, always busy and easy to see why — the spread is mostly self-service, with around 70% Malaysian dishes and 30% Indonesian. Must-orders include the Sundanese grilled chicken, beef rendang, lemak siput, and tahu telur, with the upstairs room offering slightly more comfortable seating. Beyond the headline dishes, the menu also features asam pedas, sambal goreng, ayam bakar, sayur lodeh, and a delightful assortment of traditional kuihs and desserts.
With over 30 years of heritage and eight consecutive years of the Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition, Hjh Maimunah remains one of Singapore's most cherished halal institutions.
